The Content of Heavy Metals in Unpolished Rice in Korea

Abstract
Environmental concerns are focussed on the soil and groundwater pollution by harzadous heavy metals which are exhausted from industries. Recently, the studies on the cereal pollution have been increasingly reported and especially, the pollution of rice on which most oriental people are subsisting is very important in environmental hygiene.
In this study, the author investigated the contents of harzadous heavy metals (Zn, Cd, Pb, Mn, Cu, Ni, Co, Fe) and alkaline metals (Ca, Mg) in unpolished rice collected from nationwide of korea. The 97 samples of unpolished and polished rice were collected in fall, 1973, to be digested by plasma ashing device. Atomic absorption spectroscopy equipped with multiwavelength hollw cathode lamp was used to determine the analytes. The mean contents of heavy and alkaline metals in rice samples of korea were as follows; 15.96 ppm for Zn, 0.097 ppm for Cd, 0.43 ppm for Pb, 27.57 ppm for Mn, 2.61 ppm for Cu, 0.31 ppm for Ni, 0.13 ppm for Co, 10.75 ppm for Fe, 31.22 ppm for Ca, 870 ppm for Mg and 0.0193 ppm for Hg.
Their distribution and comparison of existing levels with other reports are also described.
